I am a doctoral candidate and Teaching Assistant in management science at the University of Toulouse Capitole 1, TSM-Research Lab.

I am working on Organizational Behavior (OB), where I investigate Affective Experience, Emotions, and Leadership. My research interests include abusive and destructive supervision, stress at work, organizational change, decision-making, psychosocial risks, and well-being.

Working in a harsh environment can trigger many different affects, feelings, and emotions, like fear, anger, mistrust, and /or perceptions of injustice. Therefore, to protect themselves, individuals are likely to preserve their remaining emotional resources by withdrawing, or avoiding potentially threatening or emotionally demanding situations.

My research aims to improve our knowledge of leaders’ worrisome attitudes, such as abusive supervision (AS). AS is becoming more severe and costly and contributes to unethical and harmful consequences for abused employees and the whole organization. Since AS behaviors severely influence employees’ affective experience and, consequently, their behavioral responses, they often trigger negative affects and understudied high-activated feelings in employees. However, extant research on AS and Emotional Intelligence (EI), as a specific set of abilities, is inconclusive on its causal role (such as emotional regulation and understanding). Thus, I develop a model based on employees’ perceptions of their affects change and to what extent their regulation is beneficial or not in the workplace. Finally, I examine underlying mechanisms (core affect) and boundary conditions for the affective experience (EI moderation).

Psychosocial and neuroscientist approaches help improve our understanding of leadership and ethics, particularly for managers’ training programs or students’ ethical learning process. Well-being and more meaningful workplaces are provided by an environment conducive to trust and personal consideration.

Before joining the academic world, I had worked for more than 20 years as a professional manager in several companies and collaborated with several start-ups and SMEs. I hold bachelor’s degrees in Physical Sciences (Chemistry and Physics) with concurrent Teacher Education, a master’s degree in Business Administration (Law and Sociology), and a master’s degree in Organizational Behavior for Research from different French Universities. In addition, I am a member of the Academy of Management (AoM) and Emotions Network (Emonet). [Email: david.hampton-musseau@tsm-education.fr
